Playground Update & 3D Plans - April 26.
The SVA Trustees formally agreed on reinstatement plans for Staveley playground.
This scheme is a major investment in Staveley, and will further enhance the facilities in the playground.
United Utilities will be carrying out essential sewer works through the playground and the southern side of the sports field. As a result, the playground will close on Monday 18th May and will reopen (subject to unforeseen delays) on Sunday 6th September.
The plan for reinstating the playground after the sewer works has been developed following consultation with students of Staveley CE Primary School, Fell Kin CIC and YPOS (Young People of Staveley).
During consultation sessions, children were invited to respond to potential designs and give their preferences on different options and colours. They also had the opportunity to develop and share their own imaginative ideas.
A key focus was the replacement of the large tower structure. The original tower cannot be reinstated due to updated safety regulations, so children were shown three alternative designs and asked to select their preferred option, colours, and explain their reasoning.
Feedback was clear: young people wanted something tall and exciting. The chosen design was described as:
“really cool”
“fun”
“good size”
“great for hide-and-seek”
“full of fun activities”
Children particularly liked features such as swirly slides, climbing nets, and multi-level play, with many emphasising height:
“I like big towers”
“It’s fun to climb high”
“High stuff is cool and more fun”
One comment captured the wider appeal:
“I like being up high because I can see the mountain in the distance.”
Beyond the tower, children highlighted their favourite types of play: climbing, hanging, sliding, hiding and balancing. The consultation helped to determine replacement equipment for any items that cannot be reinstated. The plans include:
Trim trail equipment to support children’s balance, build strength and improve coordination
An inclusive roundabout to enhance the playground’s accessibility
A storytelling chair and toadstools to encourage imaginative and quieter social play
A project representative said:
“The children’s ideas have been incredibly thoughtful and creative. What’s come through strongly is their love of climbing, challenge, and playing together.”
The renewed playground will continue to be owned, funded, and maintained by Staveley Village Association, registered charity 1201087, ensuring it remains a valued community space for years to come.
